Plan beyond the tuition line

Tuition is a starting point, not the whole budget. Separate published estimates from your expected costs and the funding you have confirmed.

This is general education. We may earn a commission from partner links. Read our disclosure.

Start with the details

  1. List tuition, fees, housing, food, books, transport, and personal expenses.

  2. Mark what is paid to the school and what you will pay elsewhere.

  3. Compare confirmed aid and other funding with the timing and amount of the costs.

Questions worth asking

  • Which expenses are estimates, and which are billed amounts?
  • What changes between schools or living arrangements?
  • Have I included costs that happen before funding arrives?

A detail to keep in mind

A published cost estimate may not match your actual expenses. Confirm current figures and aid details directly with each school.
